2021 OnDemand Webinar: The Article of the Future Revisited

With the 2010 introduction of their “Article Future” format, Cell Press created a new container for research that included supporting data, centered user needs, and reflected the need for more snackable and sharable content. These elements of the Article of the Future have since become widely adopted and are now seen as the norm, so what's next? This webinar will feature speakers who are leveraging user behavior to explore new and more valuable ways to communicate research and the research process. Representing publishers and aggregators across business models and disciplines, they will examine current projects that are expanding our concept of the journal article and discuss what the next 10 years may bring.

Hannah Heckner, Director of Product Strategy, Silverchair

As Product Strategist, Hannah Heckner works to inform, prioritize, and execute on the Silverchair Platform Development Plan. This includes work in overseeing the Platform Decision Log which captures internal platform development suggestions; facilitating Publisher Working Groups that discuss industry trends, publisher needs, and developing Silverchair solutions; and managing vendor relationships and internal implementation for the Silverchair Universe program and other third party relationships. She has worked within academic publishing for over 10 years and has experience with both commercial and non-profit publishing, most recently at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Shawnna Buttery, Lead Editor of STAR Protocols

Shawnna Buttery brings her broad expertise in publishing and her curiosity for all things biology as the Lead Editor of STAR Protocols. Shawnna’s training in the laboratory was in cell biology, studying the cytoskeleton in nematodes as a graduate student at Florida State and in budding yeast as a postdoc at Dana-Faber Cancer Institute. In 2012, she joined Elsevier as a Scientific Editor for the journal BBA and then moved to Cell Press as an editor at Cell Reports. She launched STAR Protocols in 2019.

Patti O. Davis, Senior Product Manager, EBSCO Information Services

Patti O. Davis has more than 20 years of experience in publishing and higher education. She is currently Senior Product Manager with EBSCO Information Services, where she is developing new proprietary products for the company. She has traveled throughout the world in her role during her career, speaking with researchers and scholars about how to write and publish academic articles. Patti began her career at a major university, where she helped researchers with writing and publishing. She has also been an acquisitions editor for textbooks, general interest books and monographs. Before joining EBSCO in 2019, she led the North American journals publishing program for a British social science publisher. Patti lives in Boston and is an avid gardener. She also has a lifetime goal of visiting every national park in the country.

Heather Norton Blackburn, Director of Scholarly Journal Publishing, American Diabetes Association

Heather Norton Blackburn is currently the Director of the Scholarly Journals program at the American Diabetes Association, where she has held a range of positions over the last 20 years, from copyediting to production and management. She works closely with Science and Health staff to publish the Association’s clinical practice guidelines and has given a handful of talks on this evolving publication type. Heather holds an MPS degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she studied digital publishing intensively, focusing on website design and architecture. Heather recently relocated with her family to Williamsburg, Virginia, where she lives with her husband, two children, and their dog, a miniature pincer. She is enjoying reconnecting with family and nature and loves spending time at the beach.

Terry Ehling, Director of Strategic Initiatives, MIT Press

Terry Ehling returned to the MIT Press in 2017 after holding executive positions at the Cornell University Library and at Johns Hopkins University Press’s Project MUSE.  In her current position at the MIT Press, as Director of Strategic Initiatives, she is responsible for developing the Press’s R&D agenda and overseeing implementation of projects jointly incubated with the Knowledge Futures Group. During her initial tenure at the Press she established the Digital Projects Lab. The DPL was established as a "field station" where the Press could develop prototypical electronic products for the scholarly communities that the Press has served so well in print.  She developed the first fully OA book, City of Bits, in 1995, and went on to design and launch one of the first scholarly online communities, CogNet, for the brain and cognitive sciences. 

 Michele Avissar-Whitting, Editor-in-Chief, Research Square

 Michele has been Operations Director at Research Square since April 2018, overseeing production processes for the preprint platform as well as   editorial services. Before that, she held a number of different roles at the company ranging for editing to helping launch the Video Abstract   program. She has a PhD in Medical Sciences from Brown University.
