2021 OnDemand Webinar: Does Anyone Read Books Anymore?

Universities are negotiating deals with publishers so their students don't have to buy their own books. Libraries with shrinking budgets are deprioritizing books in their purchasing. Researchers in some disciplines are focusing on journal publications instead of books as they work to advance their careers. Despite these trends, many people strongly believe books continue to be an important part of the scholarly publishing world. In this webinar, we will speak with a professor, a librarian, a university press, and a larger book publisher about what they see as the major changes in the past five years, and what they think the next five years will hold.

Shirley Decker-Lucke, Content Director, SSRN
Shirley Decker-Lucke is the Content Director at SSRN, where she is responsible for ensuring the platform supports content and researcher needs for the dissemination of early stage research (preprints). Throughout her career she has focused on merging content and technology in innovative ways that serve the research and those who rely upon it. One recent example is the creation of a Coronavirus Research Hub to quickly share preprints in support of global efforts to fight the pandemic. Previously she was a books Publishing Director at Elsevier.

Kevin R. Garewal, Associate Director of Collections, Harvard Law School Library
Kevin Garewal is the Associate Director of Collections at the Harvard Law School Library. Kevin has almost twenty years of collection development experience in University, Public, and Special Libraries. He has presented a number of times on collection development, monograph acquisition, and researchers’ needs. His research interests include workplace morale/burnout and acquisitions/budget management. Kevin holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from Kent State University, as well as a Juris Doctorate and Masters in Accounting from Cleveland State University. He has also worked as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and Auditor. 

Eren Gümrükçüoglu, Adjunct Professor of Music, Duke University
Eren Gümrükçüoglu is a Turkish composer and researcher of acoustic and electroacoustic music based in Durham, NC. Eren holds a PhD in music composition from Duke University where he currently teaches the history and practice of electronic music composition. His research is focused on the dynamics of interaction between electronics and live instruments, generative systems, the utilization of non-western elements in concert music, jazz improvisation, and genre divisions with an emphasis on listening practices. His music has been performed at national and international festivals/conferences such as June in Buffalo, SICPP, SEAMUS, and ilSuono. Performers of his music include Quince Ensemble, Semiosis Quartet, Ensemble Suono Giallo [IT], JACK Quartet, New York Polyphony, Mivos Quartet, Conrad Tao, Reuben de Lautour [NZ], Ulrich Mertin [DE], Deviant Septet, yMusic Ensemble, Naked Drum Project [TR], UNC Wind Ensemble, Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra [TR], and Metropole Orkest [NL]. Eren’s scores are published by Babel Scores, Paris.

Stephanie Williams, Director, Wayne State University Press
Stephanie Williams is the Director of Wayne State University Press. She has previously held marketing management positions at Pelican Publishing Company, the University Press of Florida, the University of Missouri Press, the University Press of Kentucky, and was briefly director at Ohio University Press. Stephanie is one of the founders of the Unbound Book Festival in Columbia, Missouri and is a board member of the Association of University Presses. She serves on the Association’s Equity, Justice, and Inclusion committee and co-chairs an initiative to activate university press directors in developing more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations.  Photo credit: Anastasia Pottinger

Elizabeth Munn serves as the Managing Director for Medical Education at Elsevier where she leads a global team that supports students and faculty across EMEA, LatAm, APAC and NOAM markets: delivering localised education solutions in English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. A publishing industry veteran with more than 29 years of experience, Elizabeth joined Elsevier in 1996 and has held diverse global leadership roles in general management, marketing, product management and content creation. A collaborative and results driven senior leader, Elizabeth’s passion lies in helping to improve outcomes in health education. Over the last 10 years she has also been very proud to mentor, coach and sponsor a variety of talented women starting out and in mid career. She holds a degree in Business from Caledonian University and currently resides in Oxfordshire, UK with her family.
